AFib Care

What is Atrial Fibrillation?

Atrial fibrillation – also referred to as AFIB or AF – is a quivering or irregular heartbeat (or arrhythmia). It feels like your heart is flip-flopping, skipping beats, or banging against your chest wall. It can also make you feel light-headed, nauseous, and weak. Your heart may beat rapidly, and you may experience shortness of breath.

At least 2.7 million Americans are living with AFIB. The problem with it is that it can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, or other heart-related complications.

At the Mobitz Heart & Rhythm Center in Houston, Texas, Dr. Alireza Nazeri is a board-certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist with a dedicated team to address your AFIB concerns by offering:

  • Consultations and risk evaluation
  • Risk stratification and diagnosis of AFIB
  • Treatment in the form of cardioversion, medication, ablation and hybrid ablation, and risk modification
  • Stroke prevention for AFIB
  • Continuous AFIB management monitoring
  • Patient education and resources
  • Collaborative team of specialists

What Symptoms of Atrial Fibrillation?

Symptoms of AFib can come and go or remain consistent. Atrial fibrillation may not always cause symptoms, but when they’re present they can include:

  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Confusion
  • Shortness of breath

It’s also common to experience the sensations of heart palpitations in your chest, like racing, flip-flopping, or an irregular heartbeat.

How is Atrial Fibrillation Diagnosed?

Patients in Houston should schedule a diagnostic evaluation for atrial fibrillation if heart palpitations or a racing heart are experienced. Other symptoms of atrial fibrillation that need an evaluation by Dr. Nazeri include:

  • Weakness
  • Dizziness
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chronic fatigue

Dr. Nazeri offers several on-site diagnostic tests to determine the root cause of your atrial fibrillation. In addition to a review of your symptoms and medical history, he may request:

Echocardiogram

An echocardiogram uses sound waves to create pictures of your heart structures. This noninvasive test can diagnose heart disease or blood clots.

Holter monitor

A Holter monitor is a portable electrocardiogram (ECG) device that is worn on a belt or around the shoulder. The device measures the activity of your heart for 24 hours or more.

Event recording

Event recording also uses a portable ECG device to monitor the activity of your heart, but for a longer period. An event recorder may need to be used for several weeks or months to get an accurate measure of your heart rhythm patterns.

Stress test

A stress test involves performing physical activities, such as walking on a treadmill, while an ECG measures your heart’s activity.

Bloodwork may also be necessary to rule out a thyroid or metabolic disorder or an infection.
