syncope

Syncope is the medical term for fainting. Episodes of syncope involve a temporary loss of consciousness that typically occurs in response to low blood pressure (lack of blood flow to the brain). Approximately 3% of men and 3.5% of women will experience syncope during their lifetime. While it can occur at any age, the incidence of syncope doubles in those over 75.

Syncope as a Symptom of an Underlying Heart Condition

Syncope is a symptom of an underlying condition. It’s important to understand the cause of syncope, which can range from a harmless condition to one that is life-threatening, such as a serious heart condition that may include:

  • Abnormal heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Blood flow obstruction in the heart or cardiac blood vessels (ischemia)
  • Valve disease
  • Aortic stenosis
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Heart failure

Because cardiac syncope can increase the risk of sudden cardiac death, it is critically important to be evaluated by a cardiologist.

At our Syncope Center, Dr. Alireza Nazeri will evaluate your symptoms and determine if a heart condition is the cause. As a board-certified cardiologist and electrophysiologist, Dr. Nazeri specializes in treating syncope that is related to heart rhythm disorders such as AFibbradycardiatachycardia, and others.
